5 Years and 34 Weeks

In December of 2010, I got a frantic phone call from my little sister who promised she had found the “perfect” guy for me. Her reasoning as to why we would make such a good match “He put up with me in our awful small group all semester and didn’t kill me.” Celeste was a senior at UGA at the time and I had disturbing visions of a 22 year old athlete whose claim to fame was being the beer pong champion of his fraternity, but she was quick to assure me that the guy she found for me was “old…like he’s almost 30!” She also said “he’s not my type, but you’ll think he’s cute.” She wasn’t exactly selling me on this guy, but for those who know Celeste and her sometimes dominating, always opinionated and often entertaining personality – this is high praise for a classmate. I originally told her no for several reasons – the most obvious of which being the fact that Celeste and I have very little in common other than anatomy and parents. Never one to be deterred, Celeste got my mom in on the fun and she quickly got in touch with me to provide her straightforward reasoning as to why it was a good idea to go on a blind date (the very idea of which caused me anxiety): “Lissa, you’re broke and, at the very least, it’s a free meal. He’s friends with Celeste so he’ll be nice and you could end up with a new friend even if the two of you don’t hit it off romantically.” Ever the optimist my mother…but she was right. At least about being broke – I was working an average of 60 hours a week as an investigator with Child Protective Services at DFCS, an often thankless job that left me overwhelmed emotionally and with little time or interest in dating. Eventually, Celeste wore me down and I agreed for her to give him my number (little did I know she had already given it to him – way to have your sister’s back, C).

The mystery man and I began talking through text message and, by the time we made official plans to meet, I knew it would be an entertaining night with a funny guy if nothing else. So on December 22, 2010 I went on my first and only blind date. Little did I know when I first saw Jason that he would end up quickly becoming my best friend and the love of my life. Fast forward five years and my life is better than even I imagined it could be when watching romantic comedies with a bottle of Pinot Grigio. In the years since our first date, we have lived in 3 states, had a combined 6 jobs, adopted and raised a naughty puppy (who by some miracle is still alive), and celebrated the many ups and downs that come with building a life together. We’ve laughed more than I would have thought, I’ve cried more than Jas is comfortable with, we’ve struggled financially, we’ve succeeded professionally, we’ve mourned the loss of loved ones, celebrated the birth of new family members and enjoyed the ride together. There is no one else I’d rather do life with and today, as I look back on the past five years, I feel forever grateful to call Jason my husband.

This year celebrating the day we met is even more exciting as it also marks my 34th week of pregnancy with our little lady. Little Peanut is no longer so little, as she is approximately 18 inches long and probably nearing 5 pounds. She is continuing to be very active and I am still enjoying pregnancy, though I’m well aware that I’m quickly losing what little grace I had up to this point (Jas likens me to a “truck driver” at least once a week – what a charmer). We are six weeks from our due date, and as we begin the countdown to D-day, I am also trying to enjoy the last few weeks of quality time as a dynamic duo before officially becoming a family of three. Like most first time mothers, I am a bit anxious and overwhelmed, but I feel better knowing I have Jason by my side and I know that we are ready for this next chapter of our lives together. Cheers to 5 years and here’s to many more!

Another Busy Week...

I'm sure I'm like most people in that, when the holidays approach, time seems to speed up and my once manageable calendar all of a sudden feels crammed with too many activities - many of which cost too much money! This year is no different and, if anything, is only heightened as we near our last Christmas as a family of two - and frantically work to complete our to do list before baby makes her appearance.

This week was another busy one for the Whittaker's - busy, but productive. Jason was out of town and I spent the majority of the week planning a collaboration meeting at work. I was able to spend time with one of my best friends, Mandi, at her new house and we had such a great time catching up. She was so sweet to get another cute outfit for Hadley - I just love it! We also received a package in the mail from my friend Ashleigh - the Peanut onesie is just perfect! She is due with her first child in mid-January and I am excited to set up a play date for the girls the next time Ashleigh comes into town.

On Thursday, I had a doctors appointment and am happy to report that things continue to go well for Mama and Baby. Her heart rate remains strong at 130 and my BP is still low (98/60 at the last appointment). I have been struggling with nausea the past few weeks, but the doctor believes this is normal and assured me that everything looks good and we are still on track for a February arrival. Most days, I still feel really good and enjoy being pregnant, so until I am very uncomfortable - I am happy to keep her cooking!

The weekend was busy with normal errands, church and a Christmas party with friends. I am finding I tire pretty easily these days so I'm already planning an early bedtime for me tonight! It was nice to catch up with Jason after his trip and spend time with Tina, Justin and the girls. Two of our pastors at church, Scott and Candace Shaw, were sweet to give us a box full of baby clothes that belonged to their daughter Charlotte. I just love seeing her closet get full with all the cute clothes and hair bows and it's fun to imagine what she will look like when she is finally here and able to wear them all!

Jas is off this week for a much deserved vacation (though, I doubt it will be very relaxing given the to-do list we are continuing to tackle. I broke it up into sections and have marked off everything we've done so far to keep him motivated - just what everyone wants to do on their days off, right?!) I am working through Wednesday but we are planning a low key Christmas just the two of us (and Gracen of course) at home, and I am looking forward to a few days of relaxing, quality time.

Family, Food and Fun

It was another busy, fun filled week at the Whittaker household. My little sister, Celeste, came into town on Tuesday and stayed with us. She was really excited to come into town to meet Sadie Kay and she was a huge help to Tina. I had to work, but was able to spend time with them each evening. It was great to see her and we are looking forward to her next trip to KC in the spring (and we are already making a list of things she can do to help!)

Thursday was Jason's birthday and, bless his heart, the day ended up being mainly about Hadley! His team from work threw us a baby shower and gave us some really great gifts including diapers, a dehumidifier, a bath set and a cute UGA outfit and matching bib. Then we came home to a gift from a former coworker of mine who sent a "Peanut" ornament. Jas had been adamant that I not spend any money as we are trying to save for the baby so we had a family dinner with everyone on Friday and we will celebrate just the two of us when he gets back into town this weekend. I wish we were in a position to celebrate him the way he deserves, but I hope he knows how much he is loved and appreciated!

It was so nice to spend time with everyone during the weekend and Jason and I are getting a true taste of what it will be like to bring an infant home. Luckily, my sister and brother-in-law have adjusted quickly and will be an invaluable asset to us come February. I think Jason and I are both feeling a bit overwhelmed the closer we get to "D-Day" but I have faith that he will do great. Just look at him with both girls from Friday!

Today is Tina's birthday - as well as my oldest niece, Rowan. Poor Tina is at home with a newborn and a sick toddler so I have a feeling she isn't celebrating much today, but I hope she gets to enjoy a nap this afternoon at least. I love both of these birthday girls more than they know!

32 Weeks

We are 32 weeks today and officially 8 weeks from our due date! So hard to believe that we are so close and I know it will come much faster than I would like, but we are getting excited! We continue to make progress on our to do list and I’m hoping we will be finished by the end of the month so Jas and I can enjoy a month or so of quality time before officially becoming a family of three.

At 32 weeks, Peanut is:
-          About 18 inches long and could weigh as much as 4 lbs
-          About the size of an armadillo
-          Practicing breathing and “swimming”  throughout the day
-          Probably sucking her thumb
-          Very active early in the morning and throughout the day – but, so far, she is sweet enough to let Mama sleep most of the night

At 32 weeks, Mama:
-          Has gained almost 18 lbs (given my appetite this number is going to get way bigger in the next few weeks)
-          Can’t eat enough hot wings and could do without the veggies Jas makes me eat
-          Has learned to never be too far from a bathroom and is happy when she can go more than an hour without needing to pee
-          Continues to work out regularly, much to the delight of my coworkers I’m sure
-          Is still sleeping well and feeling really good most days
-          Loves her baby but isn’t quite ready to meet her J
Jas and I have our first “Newborn Care” class this weekend and our next appointment with the doctor is on the 17th. We are looking forward to some time off together around the holidays - our last Christmas without a little one running around!

Week in Review

What a busy week! I meant to update the blog a few different times, but something always came up. In all honesty, I probably started this post three times before forgetting what I was doing and moving on to something more productive…most likely eating. Pregnancy brain is no joke and the struggle is real! I now have a to-do list for my to-do list and nothing is getting done. I’m telling myself this is good preparation for the craziness that will soon become my life when we welcome a tiny human into our home (that may just be to make me feel less like I’m losing my mind and convince myself that I still have semblance of control over my life).

On Thursday we had an OB appointment. Things continue to go really well and I am ever so grateful for having such an easy and enjoyable pregnancy. Even with being tired and getting more uncomfortable by the week, I am loving the experience and am already looking forward to doing it again (don’t tell Jason!) I have gained about 18 pounds and am really starting to feel the extra weight – I hope the other women in my workout class enjoy watching me huff and puff through simple exercises. I’m sure I make them feel better about their own fitness level! My BP remains low and the baby’s heartrate was a strong 132. Recently, it seems as if she has gotten more on my schedule and she is more active during the day and less so at night, which is helping me to continue to sleep pretty well. Even with multiple trips to the bathroom, I sleep more than I did pre-pregnancy!

Tina is continuing to recover at home with Sadie Kay after her delivery and Jason and I spent a lot of time with the Myers this week, helping to take Mickie to and from school, and cuddling the baby and helping around the house when we could. On Saturday, Cerner hosted the annual Winter Wonderland at their Riverport location. Jason and I took Mickie and had a really great time. We made crafts, wrote a letter to Santa, met Santa and took a picture with him and enjoyed a photo booth. It was a fun morning and we talked about how next year we will be going with three little girls – hard to imagine!

Sunday, Jas and I spent the day together and really enjoyed some quality time. We hosted at church, then went shopping and ran errands. I cleaned the house while Jas decorated for Christmas and we are beginning to look more festive at the Whittaker Inn. My younger sister, Celeste, flies into town tomorrow afternoon and I am looking forward to some quality time with both my sisters over the next several days. Time continues to move faster than I would like, but we are getting excited about all that is to come in the next few weeks!

30 Weeks, Turkey Day and a Baby!

I realized it has been a while since I last posted and I am blaming it on the fact that Thanksgiving week was pretty crazy and in all the festivities my pregnancy brain let me down. But I'll do my best to recap here.

Last Tuesday, we hit the 30 week mark! I am grateful to still be feeling pretty good physically and, despite the return of the fatigue, I'm continuing to enjoy all the quality time with my little lady. Baby is now about 3 lbs and the size of a cantaloupe. She moves around throughout the day now and I'm hoping that means she is on the same day/night schedule as her parents...we will see come February!

My parents came into town last Sunday to spend the week with us and we were all anxiously awaiting the arrival of my newest niece. Tina went into the hospital on Wednesday, but was eventually discharged when her contractions stopped. Jason stepped up to host Thanksgiving and he, with some help from Justin, made a delicious dinner that we all enjoyed.

Early Friday morning, Tina's water broke and we rushed to the hospital while Jason took Mickie for the day. For all her stubbornness leading up to making her appearance, when she decided she was ready that baby wasn't waiting for anyone. In just over 3 hours, Tina gave birth to a perfect little 7 lb 14 oz daughter - Sadie Kay Myers. She is so precious and looks just like Makenzie did when she was born. As with Mickie, Tina was a rock star, though watching her give birth while I am pregnant has made me want to keep cooking Hadley for the next several months instead of weeks!

My parents left to drive home to Atlanta on Saturday morning so Jas and I took over Mickie duty for the weekend and got in some parenting practice. We had a really good time, and despite being a little overly emotional, Mickie is handling all of the changes in her life really well. She calls Sadie Kay "my baby" and loves being Mommy's Little Helper....for at least a few minutes at a time.

As with every year, I am so thankful for my amazing and supportive family and group of friends, but this year I am particularly grateful for my newest niece, and the little turkey I am still cooking. It has been a whirlwind the past few weeks and I know the time will continue to speed up as we near the holidays so I am trying to enjoy the time I have with Jason before we become a family of 3!

Baby Shower Part 2

Over the weekend, my friends Shannon and Mandi threw a baby shower for all of our friends in Kansas City. It was such a great time! Shannon was sweet to open her home for the shower and Mandi did a great job with the food and decorations. It was so nice to spend time with everyone and we got so many great gifts that will be put to good use!

Me and Shannon who graciously offered to host!
Mandi who planned the perfect shower!

Tina and Mickie joined us for the shower as well and it was nice to have some family in attendance. I know Tina is very tired and uncomfortable these days so I appreciated her effort. Mickie was the hit of the shower and was a big help to me while opening my gifts. Each gift she would open she would hold up and say "surprise!" It was so cute!
Future cousins and (hopefully) Best Friends
My Mini BFF!
When we found out we were having a girl, we asked Mandi's boyfriend, Steve, to help us with artwork for the nursery. Steve is an incredibly talented artist and he so kindly agreed to help us. We don't have a theme for our nursery, and for a long time all we had in our minds was the color scheme (grey and yellow). I found a couple of pictures of Tinkerbell that I thought were cute and asked Steve if he would be able to recreate them. He did such a great job and we can't thank him enough. I am so excited to get them framed and see them in the nursery!

It was such a great day with sweet friends and reminded me yet again how lucky Hadley is to be joining such an amazing group of women. We both felt so loved and I know she is excited to meet everyone soon!

Third Trimester!

We are 28 weeks today and officially in the third trimester! Equal parts exciting and terrifying! It’s hard to believe we are nearing the home stretch, and I think time is starting to speed up. Luckily, depending on the patience of our little lady, we have another 3ish months to finish our preparation and enjoy some quality alone time before our lives change completely.

At 28 Weeks, Peanut:
  •          Is almost 16 inches long and weighs two a half pounds
  •           Is the size of a tropical coconut
  •          Has almost packed on enough fat to regulate her own body temperature
  •           Is practicing new skills like coughing and dreaming
  •          Moves around a lot throughout the day – she is most calm when I am walking or working out. Otherwise, she’s rockin to her own beat in there!

 At 28 weeks, Mama:
  •          Is feeling good – fat and happy most days
  •          Passed her Glucose Tolerance Test – woo hoo!
  •          Has gained about 11 lbs, though it looks and feels like a bit more
  •          Is still eating relatively well (except when Daddy is out of town!)
  •         Is maintaining the same exercise routine, though it’s now a comical sight and downright painful to try and recover afterwards!
Jason’s travel schedule has been a little crazy, but we are excited to have him home for a few days starting tomorrow. We are continuing to make slow and steady progress on our to do list and hope to get started on the nursery this weekend. I also have my KC baby shower on Sunday and I am so excited! Tina is less than a month from her due date and I think Sadie Kay is anxious to make an early arrival so we are looking forward to loving on our newest niece while still enjoying uninterrupted sleep for a few more months. So many fun and exciting things happening in our family and I couldn't feel more blessed.

It's the Freaking Weekend...

Thank goodness it's Friday! This week has been a long one and I am happy it's nearing an end. I'm even happier that Jason is home tonight and tomorrow, though he unfortunately has to leave again for work on Sunday. We have missed him this week but he has a few more weeks of back to back travel before he gets a bit of a break.

On Tuesday, we hit the 27th week mark. Our last official week in the second trimester! On Thursday, I had an appointment with my OB. I took my glucose tolerance test and, fingers crossed, I think things went well. The sugary substance was as bad as Tina warned me it would be, but I was able to choke it down and I think Hadley liked the sugar because she’s still turning somersaults! There was no sugar in my urine so the doctor is confident that my blood work will come back clean. No news is good news in this situation so let’s hope I don’t hear from the doctor anytime soon!

Thankfully, things still look good for Mama and baby. I have gained almost 11 lbs. and my BP remains low (112/60). We are still measuring a few weeks behind, but that could be because she's tiny or because she plans to make her appearance a little later in February (I'm hoping for the former!) Baby’s heart rate was strong at 140 – crazy how much louder it is now that she’s getting bigger! Now that we are almost into our third trimester (AAAH!) I am to the point where we start seeing the doctor every two weeks so our next appointment will be November 19th.

In other news, my older sister Tina is due to have her second baby any day now. Well, technically her due date isn't until December 4th, but she has been having regular contractions and it seems as if Sadie Kay is anxious to be here in time for turkey and dressing (with a father who's a chef and an uncle who pretends he's one, I can't blame her!) We are so excited to be here for this special time and live vicariously through them for a few months while enjoying a little more uninterrupted sleep.

One of the coolest things to happen this week was that my little sister Celeste sent us a video montage she had made for Hadley at our shower in Atlanta. We were lucky to have a good number of our friends and family in attendance and the video is so sweet. I cry every time I watch it and I even let Hadley listen to it! It is such a sweet memento and will be a great keepsake for her to have in the future.

26(ish) Weeks

We have passed the 26th week mark and s*** is getting real! We had such a great weekend celebrating with our family and friends and coming home I realized that was my last flight until my little Peanut is my carry on! It is hard to believe we are only 14ish weeks away from D-day. Some days I am so excited, I just want her to be here, but most days I am overwhelmed by all that is left to do and I'm glad she has a while left to cook herself to optimal cuteness.

At 26 weeks, Miss Hadley is about 14 inches long and around 2 pounds. She is roughly the size of a butternut squash or a bowling pin. She can now open her eyes and she can control her lung function on her own. Given her regular movement, she may want to be a dancer like her Mama. At this point, she is still small enough that her movement isn't uncomfortable and it's neat to watch her respond to outside noises (like Gracen barking) and respond to what I eat (she is loving the hot sauce!) She is most active during the day and at night when I am calm. I have found that exercise and regular movement seems to rock her to sleep so she misses out on all the fun at my regular Zumba classes.

I continue to enjoy being pregnant and I still feel good physically. I returned to Zumba last night after a few days out of town and I am feeling it today. I have gained right at 10 lbs and I have found that exercise is beginning to become more difficult as I get more front heavy and my sense of balance is not what it once was! Everything I have read has prepared me to gain a "hefty" amount of weight in the weeks to come so I'm sure watching me try to dance will become an even more comical experience for those in class. I keep telling myself that the activity will make it easier to bounce back after delivery so I hope that ends up being true.

Jason's travel schedule is about to pick up again and he is gone the first three weeks of November. Lucky for him, I have arranged our to do list to coincide with his weekends at home (bless his heart - he is routinely earning his spot in Heaven dealing with my crazy). We are excited to get started on the nursery and I can't wait to see it all come together.

Birthdays and Babies

Over the weekend, Jason and I traveled back to Atlanta to celebrate my grandfather's 85th birthday party and our first shower for our little lady. We flew in on Thursday night and we spent the weekend with Celeste and Shane at their house in Acworth. Celeste joked throughout the weekend that she was planning to spoil me and Tina so that we would want to move back to Atlanta. And she did not disappoint! She arranged for us to have prenatal massages on Friday (so relaxing!) and that night my parents and Jason's family came over for dinner. We enjoyed spending time all together and cheering the Royals to a victory that will take them to the World Series!

On Saturday morning, we had a maternity photo shoot that Celeste organized. It was such a sweet idea and I'm so happy we will have some cute pictures to remember this special time. Saturday afternoon, Jason and I spent some time with his family shopping at the outlet mall. That evening, we joined the rest of my family to celebrate Papa's 85th birthday. Papa is the sweetest man in the family and he is a patriarch to emulate. My cousin arranged for a photographer to take family photos at the shower and Papa told her that the secret to staying young is "family, happiness and a dirty martini." Love that sweet man!

On Saturday night, my parents stayed with us at Celeste and Shane's house and we sat around the fire pit in the backyard roasting S'mores and talking. The boys enjoyed drinking whiskey until the wee hours while us ladies hit the hay early. Sunday morning we had our shower for Hadley and it was such a blast! Celeste is quite the party planner with such an eye for detail and she did a great job bringing everything together. From the yogurt bar, to the coffee station, to the donut tower - the food was delicious. The decor was so cute and she had guests sign baby books when they arrived and guess my due date on a calendar. We were so excited to see everyone and the morning went by way too quickly.

Sunday night we enjoyed a low key night with my family playing games and watching a movie. Monday morning came too quickly and we rushed to the airport in Atlanta traffic (never moving back there for this reason alone) to make our flight on time. Jason and I have talked since getting home about how lucky we are to have such amazing and supportive family and friends. Our little Peanut has no idea how blessed she is to be entering such an awesome crew, but she will soon enough!

I cannot thank Celeste enough for all she did for us to make the weekend one we will never forget. Our shower was such a fun day and it was planned and executed to perfection. We cannot wait to see all the videos and pictures she took during the weekend so we can show Hadley when is older. I am lucky to have two amazing sisters who will no doubt be amazing aunts to our Little Lady.
